Athens, 11 November 2024 – The Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA) is organizing three important events on Greece’s energy transition, harnessing the country’s offshore wind potential, and its role in the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) sector. The events will take place in the context of Greece’s participation at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), hosted in Azerbaijan between 11 and 22 November.

With the participation of the political leadership of the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Leadership Team of HEREMA and top industry experts, there will be discussions on global energy developments. Participants will also share experiences, analyze best practices, and address the challenges of green transition. In addition, Greece’s progress in the Offshore Wind Farms (OWF) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) sectors—comprising the core of HEREMA’s mandate to render the country a green transition pioneer—will be presented. Proceedings will focus on the Company’s activities to enhance the national energy independence by leveraging new technologies and developing domestic expertise and supply chain.

The first of the three events organized by HEREMA at COP29 is titled “Energy Transition: Initiatives with Global Impact” and will take place on Wednesday 13 November (14:45-15:15 local time) at the Conference’s Greek Pavilion. It comprises a fireside chat between the Greek Minister of Environment and Energy, Theodoros Skylakakis, and the Chairman of the HEREMA BoD, Rikard Scoufias.

The second event “Offshore Wind Power: A Catalyst for Reshaping the Energy Landscape,” is scheduled for Thursday 14 November (09:45-11:00 local time), aiming to highlight the prospects of leveraging Greece’s significant offshore wind capacity, as well as its potential to become a regional green energy and supply chain hub for the wider OWF sector.

The offshore wind session will start with a fireside chat between Greece’s Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy, Alexandra Sdoukou, and the CEO of WindEurope, Giles Dickson, moderated by Mr. Scoufias.

A panel of market experts will follow, moderated by Aristofanis Stefatos, CEO of HEREMA, and with the participation of Gonzalo Saenz de Miera, Global Director of Climate Change and Alliances at the Chairman’s Area at Iberdrola; Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chief Operating Officer of Masdar; Astrid Rusås Kristoffersen, Director Group Research & Development of DNV; and Konstantinos Mavros, CEO of PPC Renewables.

The third HEREMA event, to be moderated by Mr. Stefatos, will take place on Wednesday 14 November at 14:00-15:00 (local time). Titled “Mitigating Climate Change and Decarbonizing Industry through CCS,” it focuses on the critical role of CCS technology in Europe’s journey towards decarbonization, especially in ensuring the competitiveness of hard-to-abate industries.

The panel will comprise the CEO of Global CCS Institute, Jarad Daniels; the Head of Multilateral Affairs Unit of DG CLIMA, Dimitrios Zevgolis; the Head of Carbon Storage of EnEarth, Nikolas Rigas; and the CEO of DESFA, Maria-Rita Galli.

All events hosted at the Greek Pavilion of COP29 will be livestreamed on the webpage Greece at Cop29.
